Abstract

Considering the current state of genre theory, the problem of genre is viewed through the experience of modernism and the avant-garde, which provoked the deepest critique of the effectiveness of “genre” as a category. The article seeks to prove that in these artistic movements genre keeps the significance of a fundamental law of creative production. The article also characterizes the major variations of genre structure in modernist and avant-garde works.
