Abstract: The behavior of the heat capacity and thermal expansion of solid xenon (crystals of a rare gas) is studied in the range of elevated temperatures. It is found that the relative width of the premelting zone for xenon exceeds that for other solids. The Xe premelting parameters are estimated using the single-vacancy model. The results of this study explain the known difficulties encountered in the description of thermodynamic properties of solid inert gases using simple model potentials of the interatomic interaction of the Lennard-Jones type by the fact that premelting effects are not taken into account correctly.
